Dave’s Thursday Free Play:

1* on Texas Rangers -120

The Key: The Texas Rangers have the edge on the mound over the Chicago White Sox today and should be bigger favorites as a result.  Cole Hamels is 2-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 9 starts this season. But he has done his best work on the road, where he is 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 5 starts.  Hamels is also 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in his last 3 starts as well.  He has never lost to the White Sox, going 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 4 lifetime starts against them.  His teams are 4-0 in those 4 starts.  James Shields remains awful this season as he’s 1-3 with a 5.32 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 8 starts, including 0-2 with a 5.52 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 5 home starts.  Chicago is 3-15 at home this season.  The Rangers are 31-9 in Hamels’ last 40 starts vs. a team with a losing record.  The White Sox are 0-5 in Shields’ last 5 starts.  Take Texas.

Take Texas over Chicago White Sox (8 p.m., Thursday, May 17)

Last week my free play was an absolute blowout winner. I called for the 'over' between Kansas City and Cleveland, and they combined to score 19 runs! I see another easy winner in this spot. Cole Hamels is on the mound for Texas. He has been really good after a slow start to the year. He has three of four quality starts and just a 1.58 ERA over his last three starts. He beat the Astros in his last start, giving up just one hit in six innings. The White Sox are just 10-27 on the year, and they are just 7-25 in their last 32 games overall. This team is rebuilding and they have been struggling. I don't think they will be able to stop the Rangers here, and I expect to have some very good value with low odds on this play. Back Hamels and the Rangers here.

Ross Benjamin has a winning total on Thursday night’s MLB card which is now up for sale. Ross has gone an outstanding 18-9 (67%) L27 with his MLB picks and that includes 7 winners at money line underdog prices. Ross has also released a money line winner on Game 4 of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals between Tampa Bay/Washington (8:05 ET). Since 2012, Ross is a solid 143-98 (59%) with his NHL Stanley Cup Playoff picks. Those 241 picks have come at an average money line price of -107.

Rangers (Hamels) @ White Sox (Shields) 8:10 PM ET

Game# 963-964

Play On: Under 9.0

The Rangers lefty Cole Hamels has displayed very good form during his previous 3 starts by posting a 1.59 ERA during those outings. Hamels has also gone 4-1 under the total in 5 road starts this season while compiling a stellar 2.54 ERA. The Rangers have seen 4 of their last 5 games go under the total.

The White Sox starter James Shields has an inspiring 0.86 WHIP throughout his previous 3 starts. He’ll be facing a Rangers team that’s being outscored by an average of 1.3 runs per game in 2018. Shields is 24-9 (72.7%) under the total in his 33 career starts against teams that are being outscored by 1.0 or more runs per game. The White Sox have seen each of their previous 3 games go under the total. Bet on this game to go under the total for my free pick of the day.

Give me a reason, any reason, to play against the White Sox and I'm there. Here are three quick reasons. Cole Hamels. James Shields. Fair lay price.  The Rangers are far from good. But they're the '27 Yankees compared to the White Sox, who have the worst record in the majors at 10-29. The White Sox are a mind-bogging 3-15 at home this season and have dropped 13 of their past 15 games.  Texas is just one game below .500 on the road this year. Hamels is 2-1 with a 2.54 ERA in five road starts this season. Hamels is in great form with a 1.93 ERA during his past four starts. He also is 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA in four career starts against the White Sox.  The Rangers just lost Adrian Beltre to injury again, but have back Rougned Odor and Delino DeShields.  Shields is 36. His ERA in 2016 was 5.85. His ERA was 5.23 last season. It's 5.44 this season. The White Sox have lost in Shields' last five starts.  I understand the White Sox are rebuilding. But I don't get why they continue to keep the washed-up Shields in their rotation. As long as this happens, though, I'm going to be in fade mode.  (Editor's note: Stephen Nover had an easy run line winner with the Indians on Wednesday and has his MLB Game of the Week going today in addition to this free selection. Stephen also has his strongest hockey play of the year today with his 100-Dimer on the Lightning-Capitals Game 4 matchup.)
